Today Emily and I brought doughnuts and drinks up to her homeroom class to celebrate her Las Vegas win. She's actually been bullied by the "click" girls in school. They are green-eyed that Emily's doing gymnastics and they're not I guess. In any event, you catch more flies with sugar... Her teacher expressed an interest in watching her next event. I told him it was in Colorado Springs. He seems game to travel that far. That would be sweet if we had people from her elementary school there too. Maybe I can talk my sisters into actually watching one of her last two meets at this level.
I think the trip finally got to Emmy. As I type this she's snoozing on the couch behind me. Training for the upcoming meet in February begins tomorrow, so tonight we will both rest.
The day to day exploits in the life of a single mom following her youngest daughter down life's path...
The care and training of a young gymnast
I wish I had started this blog a while back. At that time I had no clue my youngest daughter would have the drive to be a gymnast. I just knew I couldn't contain her energy and needed an outlet for it's release. Hopefully this blog will be helpful to others that have a kid interested in gymnastics.
As I am a single disabled parent, money's been tight and this sport is not cheap. The commitment of financial resources, time and energy for the parent can be as demanding as the physical demands placed on the athelete.
This blog is created for all the unsung heroes behind that future medalist, the parent.

Vitaly Scherbo Invitational - worth the trip!
Well we're home, back in Denver. The Vitaly Scherbo invitational was a grand success for the newly minted TIGAR girls team. Level 4, Level 5 and Level 6 teams all placed 3rd. We started our trip at DIA and met up with two other team members, Gigi and Tess who flew in on the same flight that we did. It was a great start to a fun event.
Kate Bain took home the All-Around in Level 4 Division B. Kate's had a fabulous season. Emily took home the all-around in Level 4 Division D with an All Around score of 36.85 and the team trophy with the highest Level 4 scores. Noelle finished first on Floor. Our Level 4 TIGARS have blasted onto the scene!
Emily's individual scores for the Vitaly Scherbo Invitational:
Vault - 9.05 (3rd Place), Floor - 9.1 (5th Place), Uneven Bars - 9.275 (1st Place) ,
Balance Beam - 9.425 (1st Place). All Around = 36.85 (1st Place)
This meet was held at the YMCA in North Las Vegas and was organized brilliantly. Two gymnasiums were used. One strictly for competition, and one strictly for the awards ceremony. All of the events went off on time. The competitors were not stressed in any way and from my viewpoint, all of the kids seemed to be relaxed and enjoyed themselves.
Grandpa was present, since he lives one exit down from the Y, and he thoroughly enjoyed watching the events. It was great to have him there! Emily had to nap for two hours before she had to go out and perform. She was not well, running a fever at noon, I gave her two Tylenol and she slept until it was competition time. Megan Jackson was ill that evening after the meet and Kate succumbed to the crud the next day, so I wouldn't be surprised if this virus spreads through the entire team by week end. Keep well little Tigars...

Emily turns 10.
Wow, haven't been here for a while. With the holidays and all, I've fallen behind it seems. Emily had her photos taken by Lifescape Portraits at the gym, and I must say that these images are fabulous!
Vote for Emily's photo! http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=146813132040200&set=a.146813085373538.40226.137986392922874&pid=228494&id=137986392922874
Tomorrow Emily will be 10 years old and lots of things have happened since December. Yesterday we held a tea party at my sister June's house and my sister Jean made a fabulous Mad Hatter Cake.

Eight days til Christmas
Today Emily was fitted for grips at the gym. She promptly attempted to use them on the bars before I had a chance to file out the finger holes. Five minutes later, bloody fingers. Emily likes to think she knows better than Mom about most things, she's a hard headed girl.

Christmas Party at Gym this Saturday!
Well here it is already Wednesday. This week is going by too fast, can't seem to get any task completed.
After practice at the gym last night, and homework, Emily decorated the tree. This year we opted for the plastic ornaments, knowing that the cats would probably pull them all off the tree, like they do every year.
Emily's finally feeling better about her performances at the State meet. Now she knows how important stretching is. Getting leg cramps at the most important meet of the season is not what you want to have happen.
I finally uploaded photos and videos of the State meet. I'll post them hopefully tomorrow.

State Championship is finally here and over with.
Well, just got home. TIGAR did very well for a new gym finishing in 4th place Emily performed her best all around scores and she STILL wasn't happy with herself. I'm tellin' ya, it's tough to live with a competitive bi-polar perfectionist.
Emily's results: Vault 9.15, Bars 9.125, Beam 9.375, Floor 9.15 AA 36.8
She was 4th on beam and 12th all around. That didn't make her happy, it threw her into a depression! I was thrilled that she got all 9's for every event, and she did it with a shin splint. Beth, TIGAR's owner, felt that Emily got robbed on her vault and her bar routines. Emily was a little ahead of her music on the floor routine, but she quickly got on track and Beth thought the judges were a bit harsh on their scoring there as well. I am ignorant enough to just sit back and enjoy the performances while gritting my teeth and praying she doesn't hurt herself.
Hopefully in the next few days I'll have time to jump in here and write more, but tonight, I must close my eyes and rest...

Session 1 TIGAR girls RULE!
Well, I couldn't get down to the State Meet this morning as I got called off on a Muttley's Maid job for a client - before the snow flies - in Boulder, so I kept in touch with Heidi to find out what went on. It KILLED ME to not be there!
So here's the text from Heidi...
Vault scores Noelle 9.4, Violet 9.5, Kate 9.575, Maddy 9.6 WOW
Bars Noelle 9.2, Violet 8.2, Kate 9.15, Maddy 8.7
Noelle was 5th on bars and 4th on beam, 13th on vault and 2nd on floor AND... 3rd PLACE ALL AROUND - FABULOUS!
Noelle was so sick on Thursday with the stomach flu. Prayers work! Emmy and Noelle have been together training with Svetlana for so long they've become sisters from different mothers. They even act like siblings. I am SO PROUD and she's not even my kid!
Kate B. also competed with Noelle, both girls made the All Around podium as 2nd and 3rd respectively and TIGAR Gym won Team 3rd for that age division. TIGAR is a new Gymnastics Studio and we all want it to be the best in Denver! Good luck to the rest of the girls! I'll be reporting in as the results are known.
